History moment—Royal Rifles of Canada

Updated: Dec 18, 2022

Are you one of those who noticed that the Royal Rifles of Canada badge is on our Regimental colors? If so, do you know why? In fact, the regiment does not have a “direct” connection. However, there are some "indirect" links.

In the early 1900s, one of the former commanders, LCol R.J. Spearing (commander 1905-1910), began his military career with the 8th Battalion (Royal Rifles). A small anecdotal wink because this is not worth a badge.

During the Second World War, the 7/XI Hussars made a very significant contribution to filling the ranks of the Royal Rifles of Canada. And this, by far, with the largest number of men supplied to the Royal Rifles of Canada (RRoC) who came from the Bury region, in the Eastern Townships. For this reason, the 7/XI Hussars were allowed to put the RRoC badge on their flag, but it was never added. Since we perpetuate these, Major (retired) Chistopher Galvin, sergeant major at the time, discovering this distinction, made the request to Ottawa to add it on the colors of The Sherbrooke Regiment. This is how our colors bears the badge of the Royal Rifles of Canada. In recognition of the enormous sacrifices made by these RRoC Townshippers, many of them from the 7/XI Hussars, endured the horrors of war from the Japanese after the fall of Hong Kong.
