The Atholl trophy was introduced in 1971. It was presented to the Sherbrooke Hussars by Chief Warrant Officer Len Murray, former (RSM) of the 12e RBC Valcartier. He served as a Regular Force support staff in Sherbrooke. CWO Murray took his duties very seriously and was recognized for helping the development of the unit's NCOs. To help recognize the work of the NCOs and to recognize excellence, CWO Murray presented the Atholl Trophy. The name Atholl in Gaelic comes from Mr. Murray's Scottish roots, a descendant of the people of the Atholl region of Scotland, the only state that still has a legal private army, the Atholl Highlanders, although it is now ceremonial in nature. This area of Scotland, rich in military history and traditions of excellence, has always been a source of reference for CWO Murray.
The Atholl Trophy will be presented to the ''MOST PROFICIENT NCO'' who is the most qualified, technical and competent NCO, qualities that will be reflected in his personal discipline and dedication to the regiment. In the greatest regimental tradition, the Atholl Trophy was first awarded in 1970 by LCol Jackson to MWO B. Bourque.
